We are here for anyone who is concerned about their own safety or the safety of someone else. A safety plan is a personalized, practical plan to help you stay safe while in a relationship, if you’re planning to leave, or after you have left.
FRC staff work one-on-one to create safety plans with survivors, their children, and their friends and family. This ensures that the safety plan is accessible and practical to follow for each individual. While some things in your plan may seem obvious, it’s important to remember that when in a crisis your brain functions differently- it may be difficult for you to think clearly or make logical decisions. Questions involving the safety and comfort of you and those around you can be thought out in advance in order to protect you and your loved ones.
Safety planning is especially important if you are considering leaving because leaving an abuser is the most dangerous time in the relationship. If you are planning to leave it would be beneficial to gather important documents and items ahead of time.
Items you may want to gather before you leave:
- Medicine and prescriptions
- Birth certificates
- Social security cards
- School and medical records
- Bankbooks, credit cards
- Driver’s license and car registration
- Welfare identification
- Passports, immigration paperwork, work permits
- Insurance papers
- Divorce papers, custody orders
- Address book
- Personal cell phones, laptops and chargers
